Introduction

The debate over whether artificial intelligence (AI) can outperform human architects in design has been ongoing for years. With the advent of advanced AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney AI, this debate has intensified, as these tools have shown remarkable capabilities in generating optimized and sustainable design solutions. In this experiment by Dami Lee, and Raffaele Di Nicola of NolliStudio, with Trushit Vyas from Supersh*t architecture studio based out of Vancouver, find out how AI is better at some tasks in architecture design, and how it is emerging as a competing player.

In this amazing video aptly named AI vs. ARCHITECT where this amazing team of highly passionate architects takes on AI tools to find out if AI is better or they are better at Architecture. While AI is clearly way ahead in terms of production quality at this time I think with a little more deeper look you can find some challenges with the function. While AI is not fully there yet, I think it will get there in a short amount of time.

I hope you enjoy this video.

From the makers

The strides that AI has made in recent years are truly remarkable, yet somewhat startling at the same time. With chatbots like ChatGPT producing written content that is nearly indistinguishable from human-made material, and image- based tools like Midjourney generating stunning visuals in mere seconds from just a few text prompts, AI is increasingly becoming capable of performing tasks that were once deemed exclusively human.

This rapid progress raises significant questions, not only regarding the impact these new technologies will have on our human roles, but also on the very essence of creativity and competence in this new era. Despite the seeming impossibility of the task, we wanted to test how human-made work stacked up against AI-generated content. To do so, we decided to use the AI powerhouses revolutionizing the architecture industry – Midjourney, Dall-E, and ChatGPT.

Inherent in the challenge is the undeniable fact that we were tweaking the prompts to generate the desired level of work for the AIs. However, we made every effort to ensure that the game “fair”, by carefully selecting challenges that could be performed by an AI with minimal human intervention, while also ensuring that the prompts did not deviate too much from the original challenge description. The work was shown to our Discord server, Archibeans, who voted on the work without any context, solely relying on their “gut feeling” to make their decision.

Taking into account these various factors at play, the outcome of the challenges was still surprising to us on several fronts, given that the AIs were the winners of all three challenges.

Conclusion – AI vs Architecture.

AI tools like ChatGPT and Midjourney AI are better than human architects at certain tasks in architecture design, particularly those that require precision, efficiency, and optimization. However, they cannot replace human creativity and intuition yet, which are essential to the art form of architecture.Advertisements

The future of architecture design lies in a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of AI tools with the creativity and intuition of human architects. Eventually these AI tools will become more powerful and eventually replace architects. I think we need to rethink the future of architecture in the age of AI. We need architects to build processes, checks and balances so AI does not go rogue. We need architects to formulate a body to inform policy decision making and finally we need to change the way we educate future architects.

I think the question is is it AI vs Architects or AI vs Architecture.
